2023 Costuming Goals

It's time to set some goals for 2023.  It will be interesting to see which of these I actually complete in a year and how many projects I complete that are not on this list!

1.  Finish my linen voile lappet cap.

2.  Grace Banker needs an overcoat for mid January.

I have some navy wool broadcloth that may work for this.  I need to do a bit more research to find out if this is the right textile or if I should order something else.  This one is still up in the air as it's a real time crunch

3.  Elizabeth Chew would like some fashionable undress. 

I have 7 yards of this silk.  It screams something sack back.  I think a late 70s short sack with sabot sleeves would fit the bill nicely.  It will have modest trim --typical of that era--with a shorter petticoat.  My goal is to have this for our February event.

4.  Yellow linen petticoat

     This is the petticoat to go with Widow Ferguson's work gown that I made last year.  It will also go with another linen gown I have planned.

5.  Simple summer 1920s Robe de Style

6.  To piggy back on the last item, I need an under slip with panniers for the robe de style based on this one from the Underpinnings Museum.

7.  1916 Spring frock

8.  1903 Corset

The background of this coutil is very pale--almost white.

9.  Long Regency Stays--Red Threaded pattern

10.  1775-76 Linen gown

11.  Mrs. Izard's 1776 silk sack.

12.  Finish my Met 1812 Cap project. 

I've drafted a pattern for this cap which I need to muslin, refine and make up.  I have swiss batiste in the same pattern.

Other possibilities from past years:

1.  1912 tea gown (center image)

2. 1920 Robe de Style--repro of MDHS frock.

3. 1790s round gown--using the sprigged lawn from Virgil's Fine goods

4.  Late 19teens/early 1920s winter jacket

I have some black wool melton and nice faux fur to trim this one.

I have a bunch of 1930s - 1950s day wear to make but that's my "modern" clothing so I won't list that here.

So the real challenge will be sticking to this list when I know that other inspiration will hit!

2022 Costuming Goals

 Well New Years Day always makes me go into planning mode.  So here goes.

1.  1921 Seaside Dress in black worsted and lace.  This one is almost complete so it will definitely get done.  I'm making View C.

2. 1920 coat in black melton with faux fur trim and vintage passamenterie buttons.

3. Spotted wool Italian gown and pink worsted petticoat.  This was from my 2020 goals.  Started but not completed.

4.  Black silk sacque and winged cap to complete Mrs. Coffin's mourning outfit

5.  Shot silk sacque and cap to complete Mrs. Izard's outfit

6. 1790s round gown similar to this image using the lawn from Virgil's Fine Goods

7.  1920s Robe de Style based on this extant in the Maryland Center for History and Culture.

8.  1903 Truly Victorian Edwardian Corset.

9.  RedThreaded long Regency stays

10. - ? .  I have a variety of 20th century vintage that I want to do but haven't planned the specifics for.   The best part of this is that I have all the stuff in my stash!

Since I'm halfway through #1 and prepping the pattern for #2, it'll be nice to complete something at the beginning of the year! I also expect that I will complete things not included here as my needs dictate and not complete all of these but it's good to start the year with a plan.

Here's to a productive 2022!  Who knows what surprises it will bring!

2020 Costuming Goals

I always enjoy looking back on my costuming goals as I find that while I complete a good number of them, I end up with a lot of other unplanned projects instead.  Such is life.  Go with the flow!

I have several major events that are helping to inform my plans.  Here's what I hope to get done in 2020.

Between now and March 1,  I'd like to complete the following 4 projects:

Fur trimmed black velvet short cloak ca 1765.

I've patterned this cloak but have not begun constructing it.

Spotted worsted long sleeved Italian gown and pink worsted petticoat.  I had hoped to do this one last winter and simply didn't get to it.

Mid century silk damask gown using this gown in the Met as inspiration.  Blue taffeta petticoat to go with it. This gown was also on my list last year.  A proper mid century cap will also be made for this gown.

I've decided to embrace my inner old lady and make the iconic New England upper sort old lady gown and accessories.

The gown will be the style of Mrs. Ellery's gown below and will have a sheer black handkerchief.  This is late 1760s-1770.

My silk is more the color of Mrs. Russell's gown.  I plan on also making a white silk handkerchief with lace border and a cap with lace like Mrs. Russell's. 

 White satin mitts lined with a warm gray silk will be the final accessory foe this outfit.

A gown similar to that worn by Mrs. Ralph Izzard ca. 1776

My silk is a shot silk with turquoise and gold.  Mrs. Izard's cap will also be copied for this project.

 1912 Tea gown based on the center model in this fashion plate.  I'll need to pattern this one.

Mrs. Hodge's gold silk gown and accessories.  This one is has been on the last 2 years' lists.  It's just a matter of getting the mojo to do it as I have the materials.

I hope to be adding some Regency items--and much of that depends on if we decide to have another Regency sewing event.

There will be "modern" sewing as well which is basically anything from 1940 and up.  This one is on the queue to make late March:

I think that's about it.  It'll be fun to look back at the end of the year to see what I actually accomplished from this list and the items that were not on the list that were done.
